Did you know?

Direct debit is still a huge payment rail in the euro area

In the second half of 2024, the euro area processed ~11.4 billion direct debits (≈ +3.9% vs H2 2023) with a total value of ~€5.4 trillion (≈ +8.2%). For merchants, that underscores how entrenched SDD remains for recurring billing like utilities, telco, insurance, subscriptions, and invoicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about SEPA Direct Debit

  • What’s the difference between SEPA Direct Debit Core and SEPA Direct Debit B2B?

    Core (SDD Core)
Best for B2C (and can also be used with businesses as payers). It’s designed for broad reach and consumer protections.

    B2B (SDD B2B)
Only for business-to-business payments. It’s built to reduce refund risk and increase certainty (with stricter controls at the debtor bank).

    Key merchant-facing differences:

    Who can pay
    • Core: consumers + businesses EPC
    • B2B: businesses only EPC
    Refund rights
    • Core: payer can get money back up to 8 weeks for an authorised debit; up to 13 months if the debit was unauthorised
    • B2B: no refund for authorised payments (stronger finality), though unauthorised scenarios still exist
  • What currencies does SEPA Direct Debit support?

    EUR only.
"A SEPA direct debit can only be made in euros…” EPC

Important nuance: the payer account must be in SEPA; the account may be held in a non‑EUR SEPA currency, but the collection itself is in EUR.
  • What is a SEPA Direct Debit mandate, and what information must it include?

A mandate is the customer’s authorisation allowing you (the creditor/merchant) to collect payments from their account- paper or electronic.

    Merchants typically need (at minimum):

    • Payer (debtor) name
    • Payer account (IBAN)
    • Creditor name
    • Creditor Identifier (CI/CID)
    • Unique Mandate Reference (UMR) (or mandate reference)
    • Type of payment (one-off or recurrent)
    • Date and signature/authorisation (for e-mandates: equivalent electronic consent)

For official formatting guidance and what appears on mandate layouts, EPC provides mandate layout guidance documents. EPC (PDF)
  • Is SEPA Direct Debit available for one‑off payments, or only subscriptions?

    It supports both:

    • One-off (single) collections
    • Recurring collections (subscriptions, bills)
  • Can non‑EU merchants accept SEPA Direct Debit from EU customers?

Yes - merchant location doesn’t have to be in the EU. What matters is that:

    • the payer’s bank account is in SEPA, and
    • the debit is EUR-denominated, and
    • you use a PSP/payment setup that can support your business model and compliance.
  • How long do SEPA Direct Debit payments take to clear? (Core vs B2B)

SEPA Direct Debit is not instant.

    • B2B: at least 2 interbank working days
    • Core: at least 3 interbank working days GoCardless

Practical note: your PSP/payout schedule can add extra time on top of the interbank clearing window (this varies by provider), but the baseline scheme clearing above is what merchants usually search for first.
  • Are refunds/chargebacks possible in SDD?

Yes - especially in SDD Core (and this is the #1 thing merchants must design around).

    • SDD Core refunds (authorised): payer can request a refund within 8 weeks without justification.
    • Unauthorised collections: payer can request a refund up to 13 months.

For SDD B2B, the key point for merchants is that authorised payments generally can’t be refunded (so B2B is often preferred for high-value business invoicing, when eligible).
  • Can high-risk merchants use SEPA Direct Debit?

Yes - high‑risk merchants can use SEPA Direct Debit, but it’s not a “set it and forget it” payment method. Whether you’ll be approved (and on what terms) mainly depends on your PSP’s risk policy, your mandate/consent flow, and how you handle refund/dispute exposure that’s built into the scheme.
